Brainfood: First Impressions

by: Brainfood Summer Institute Intern Hannah Johnston

I’ve only been an intern at Brainfood for two and a half weeks, and I’ve only been interacting with Brainfood’s students for a week and half. I haven’t been around long, and I’m still learning things each day, but one constant I’ve taken note of is the care with which the students who participate in this program approach various activities.

Be it measuring flour, tasting final products, squeezing icing out of a plastic bag, or cutting out biscuits using cookie cutters, Brainfood’s students have amazed me with their value of precision and attention to detail.

This observation struck a cord in me in part because I’m impressed by the already-evident sense of ownership with which our students approach their work. I applied to be an intern at Brainfood in large part because I believe strongly in the organization’s mission, “to empower youth as resources in their own community.”

The increasing care that I see the students taking with the food they create and share with each other emphasizes to me that Brainfood is accomplishing its mission.  The students are displaying the kind of conscientiousness that, with any luck, they will go on to share with their communities.
