Welcome to Brainfood, Ricki!

Hi there! My name is Ricki. I am one of the newest members of the Brainfood team. Part of our mission is to use food as a tool to build life skills. This is exactly what drew me to Brainfood. Food is a universal language that connects people from all backgrounds and walks of life. It is not only essential to us for nourishment but it is also a way to explore cultures and take healthy risks.

In a city rich with incredible cultural and ethnic diversity it is essential to navigate the differences and appreciate what each person and group has to offer. That can honestly be uncomfortable or even scary, but food is one thing that is comfortable. It is familiar to all my senses. I see food as a passageway to a new city, culture, or region of the world. Tasting something new is like getting my feet wet without diving into the pool headfirst. It’s something I can easily relate to and feel at ease with. Each dish is an insight into something new. One dish can exhibit pieces of history tied into the personality of the chef. It can open up a conversation about regional spices and ingredients. It can lead to an in-depth discussion about who cooks in the kitchen and about cultural norms surrounding food. For me, food is the jumping off point to learning. At a basic level I can start with something I know, food, and delve into the unknown.

While I recognize food is a familiar territory for me, there are many foods that I have yet to try. To me, there is nothing more exhilarating than getting my hands dirty in the kitchen while trying something new. Perhaps frying dandelions or boiling cows tongue is a little out there. But I can feel safe stepping outside my comfort zone when I’m cooking with a group of friendly and supportive people.
Here’s to a great upcoming year and taking on challenges! Can’t wait to keep you all updated on the exciting events in the Brainfood Kitchen.
