Written by Communications Intern Casey Brand
Hi. My name is Casey and I’m one of Brainfood’s communications interns this semester. I stumbled across Brainfood when I was searching for an internship last October. Brainfood is where my interests intersect; working at Brainfood combines my passion for cooking and communications. Even better, I get to work with high school students, which I absolutely love. On my first day in Brainfood’s Chinatown kitchen, I was nervous, excited and eager. I’ve worked with high school students before, so I had a vague idea of what to expect – but these students surpassed my expectations.
Many of the students welcomed me without a second thought. “You’re a new volunteer? Oh, cool. What’s your name?”
Conversation was easy and pleasant, and I was laughing with a team of students in no time. During the course of that first afternoon, I was most impressed by the teamwork I saw. When a student tired of de-veining shrimp, other students stepped up to help her. These are the skills that Brainfood teaches, and it’s clear that participants are learning them. Before I knew it, students were plating the food as we all gathered around a table to eat. How had it come together so quickly? It seemed as if it took no time at all. This is a testament not only to the skill and diligence of the students, but also to the pleasant environment in the kitchen.
I had spent the afternoon chatting with students and occasionally offering advice. It never seemed like a chore; I was simply having fun. Brainfood is an organization that everyone should know about. Between suiting up (in adorable Brainfood aprons) and chowing down (on delicious, well-prepared food), something inexplicable happens: instructors, volunteers and students connect. That’s why I’m excited to be one of Brainfood’s communications interns this semester: I want to share Brainfood’s magic with the world.
