A Whole New (Garden) World

Look at our garden, isn’t it neat?  Wouldn’t you think our collection’s complete?

We’ve got garlic and kale a-plenty…

We’ve got radish and pumpkins galore…

You want pole beans? We’ve got twenty…

But who cares? No big deal. We want more….

Okay let me back up a bit. Last summer while out in the garden with Box Project students, I did the one thing we always warn our students about, I slipped on the slope in between garden beds. That one fall gave me the nice grass stain you see in the picture of my white pants above (which I wore not knowing there would be a garden field trip in my future).  Luckily, after some phone calls to my mom and a week long soak in Oxy-Clean, the stain came out. However, grass-stained pants are a thing of the past in the Brainfood Youth Garden thanks to steps built by handyman Otis! These steps are fantastic - not only can you move easily between the upper and lower beds, but there is also a ledge to lean on when accessing the middle of the garden beds.

And I’m not the only one excited about them. Paul and Lyssa are all smiles while checking out the steps and our students love thenew ledge!

And yes you heard right; the steps are just one of the latest additions to the Brainfood Youth Garden. With the guidance of Josh Singer from DPR, the Brainfood Youth Garden now has compost bins. With the addition of these bins, Brainfood programs will be able to cut down on our food waste from class while providing the garden with a consistent flow of soil amendments… and we couldn’t be more thrilled!
