8 Unsung Heroes of Brainfood in 2014

You’ve seen it on this blog a zillion times: the heartfelt “thank you.” There are so many people who we appreciate at Brainfood, and we’re often bragging about how great they are, from our high schoolers to our staff and volunteers, guest chefs, and donors. At Brainfood, we’re lucky to have so much support, and we’re all about giving credit where credit is due.

But there is also a brigade of behind-the-scenes helpers - a low-profile, tenacious bunch - who we rarely stop to thank publicly and who make our jobs easier, more effective, and just all around more fun. So today I’m shouting it from the (blog) mountaintops: Unsung Brainfood heroes of 2014, this one goes out to you!

1. The jumbo stand mixer – for boosting our output of challah bread, cookies, pizza dough, and other multiple-batch edibles in Box Project this summer. Jumbo stand mixer, we’re in awe of your shiny beaters and paddles.

Thank you for mixing, kneading, and whipping huge quantities of dough and batter without fear or hesitation.

2. Jo Jo, the prankster building manager at Brainfood’s Chinatown location - for forging a keen vigilance and watchfulness in our Chinatown staffers. Your stealthy placement of monster masks in the closet, crafty swapping out of our real computers with cardboard computers, and so many other clandestine pranks keep us ever alert and ready for anything - not to mention always smiling.

3. The walk-in freezer – for helping us stockpile pounds upon pounds of garden produce: dozens of gallon ziplock bags, filled with frozen pole beans, blanched swiss chard and kale, roasted eggplants, green tomatoes, and so much more. You do your job with ice-cold tenacity and grace.

4. The lowly office printer - with an understated charm and loveable quirkiness, you produce hundreds of copies of our Brainfood recipes each week, doing all the work and getting no rewards, even bearing the occasional whack of a staffer’s hand when you’re running slowly or malfunctioning. Office printer, we acknowledge you for your doggedness and persistence.

5. Those couple of students who put the word “Miss” in front of our names and make us feel like real-world adults – It’s a formality that is totally unnecessary at Brainfood, but the burst of unexpected decorum puts an extra smile on our faces and makes us reminisce about our own youth and the adults we respected.

6. Our Intern, Michele – we lured her into staying with us for a third (!) internship round this year, and we’re so excited. Each time she comes back, we put her in new situations with bigger challenges, and she keeps tackling them with competence, a sense of humor, and that positive sass we love. Michele, we can’t wait for you to be our Community MVPs program intern in the spring!

7. 50-lb bag of Costco flour – you provide that backup plan when our complex soup recipe proves too much to coordinate and we just want to go back to basics and make chocolate chip cookies or pizza dough. You grant us a seemingly bottomless supply of powdery goodness class after class. You’re a true Brainfood hero.

8. The drip irrigation system in the youth garden – for being a stalwart supporter of Brainfood’s urban agriculture endeavors. In the heat of the DC summer, we don’t have to wonder whether or not you’ll show up. We just set the timer and you always come through, dripping and dribbling that critical drink of water to our tomatoes, beets, and collard greens. We hereby bestow upon you our highest honor.
