New Beginnings

Submitted by Intern Lauryn Woodruff

The fact that it is the end of January gives me a full mix of emotions. While I am sad that the holidays are over, I am excited to be back in class especially after this crazy weather here in the District. I look forward to what the remainder of this year will bring.

First, there has been an update in my Brainfood schedule; I am now able to volunteer in two classes. Anyone who has taught or volunteered with students can understand my excitement and nervousness because no two classes are the same. The Monday class I know but the Tuesday class is like uncharted territory for me, so I will have to rethink my strategy.  (Wish me luck, but so far so good!)

It has been great to be in both classes because they balance each other out. On Monday, I have a large class with a lot of energy and Tuesday, the class is smaller and more laid back. I like participating in two sections because I am able to get to know the other group of students, which gets me energized to learn about them and their interests.

For example, this past week in class I learned some facts about three of the students. Madelyn is a sophomore at Banneker and does most of the cooking in her house. Deanna is a sophomore at the School Without Walls and in the future wants to be a cardiothoracic surgeon (if I remember correctly) and will be going to Stanford this summer for an internship. Lastly, there is Sarah, who is a senior at Bell and has applied to attend college at my soon to be Alma Matter, American University, as one of her choices. Having the opportunity to work with these students gives me so much joy and I am always happy to come to class.

Now for some reflection. In my last blog post I made personal goals for the year that were to listen, learn, and inspire. As far as a self assessment goes, I know I have learned a lot in the past four months, and I have done my best to listen to the students so they have the best experience possible, but I am not sure if I have inspired anyone yet. But class isn’t over until May so I still have some time.

That’s all for now!

Peace out Brainfoodies
